JOHANNESBURG—In what legal experts are calling “the natural progression of a 28-year African trust fund baby,” Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of the late Zimbabwean president and international strongman hobbyist Robert Mugabe, faced court Monday on charges including attempted murder, theft, and, according to sources, gross negligence in posting bottle-service photos to Instagram.
Mugabe, best known for making his father cringe on TikTok, allegedly shot a man in the back in a Johannesburg suburb known for its abundant WiFi and lack of extradition treaties. Authorities also accused Mugabe of theft and residing illegally in South Africa—though some have noted he was simply following the family tradition of taking things that don’t belong to him.
“We need to clarify if he and his co-accused are related, or if being named Mugabe is just a Johannesburg party trick now,” said investigating officer Captain Sipho Mthethwa, adding, “Frankly, there are so many Mugabes, we’re considering a frequent felon card.”
Local nightclub promoter Precious Zondo expressed disappointment that the shooting led to “zero new followers,” while resident expat Benjamin van der Merwe said, “At least when Mugabes shoot people, they usually comp your drinks.”
“The only thing more dangerous than a Mugabe with a gun is a Mugabe with a Snapchat streak to maintain,” added Johannesburg resident and security consultant Thabiso Ndlovu. Lawyers for Chatunga Mugabe declined to comment, instead referring reporters to the influencer’s pending partnership with a bail bonds clothing line.
