Saudi Official Implicated in Twitter Spy Plot To Lead US Social Media Safety Seminar

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a move widely praised for its bold commitment to transparency, officials announced Thursday that Bader al-Asaker, the top aide to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and alleged architect of an elaborate Twitter spy operation, will headline a series of “Social Media Integrity” workshops during the prince’s highly anticipated U.S. visit.

Al-Asaker, whose experience reportedly includes identifying anonymous Twitter critics and redefining the term ‘influencer,’ has never been formally charged but is widely recognized as being what one administration official called, “the James Bond of hashtag security.” Attendees are expected to learn best practices for digital privacy, self-censorship, and the lucrative global market for direct messages.

“We’re thrilled to have Mr. al-Asaker teach us how to keep our social media totally secure—from ourselves, mostly,” said State Department spokesperson Linda Ray. “It’s not every day you get real-world tips from someone with this much hands-on experience in the field.”

Al-Asaker’s itinerary reportedly also includes a closed Q&A session titled, “How to Make Friends and Silence People,” and live demonstrations of new techniques for tracking dissent using only a LinkedIn profile and some moderate curiosity. “You can really tell he cares about online safety,” said Twitter user @anonymous_critic_12345, who has since deleted their account and changed their name to ‘No One Important.’

In a joint press release, Twitter (now X Corp) assured users, “We take user privacy seriously, and any Saudi officials visiting our offices will only have access to emails, DMs, and all passwords for a limited time.”

Observers say the visit is expected to “restore trust” in international surveillance collaborations and inspire a new wave of creative username changes.
