TEGUCIGALPA—As millions of Hondurans headed to the polls Sunday, election officials confirmed a record turnout was fueled in part by U.S. President Donald Trump’s bold promise to cut off foreign aid, Netflix access, and “potentially all Taco Bell franchises south of Texas” if his favored candidate loses.
President Trump’s surprise endorsement of Nasry ‘Tito’ Asfura of the rightwing National Party stunned many observers who had previously assumed he could not find Honduras on a map. “I did the research, and Tito is the best—he told me he likes golf and Trump Tower soap dishes,” Trump tweeted from a gold couch, adding, “If the Honduran people make a bad choice, frankly, they’re going to have a bad time. No more aid. No more McFlurries. That’s just how democracy works.”
Election monitors reported that several voters arrived at polling stations wearing “I Voted (For Tito) or Else” T-shirts, some appearing confused. “I don’t know who Tito is, but I really need my American cheese slices,” confessed local voter María Gómez, nervously tucking her ballot into the box. “My cousin said if we want to keep Doritos, we have to listen to the man from television.”
Meanwhile, rival candidate Xiomara Castro condemned the foreign interference, stating, “This is Honduras, not a Trump Casino,” while National Party strategist Alfredo Castaño celebrated the support: “We will cherish all extra aid if we win, especially if it comes in the form of MAGA hats and expired Hamburger Helper. Viva democracy!”
At press time, UN observers were seen debating whether requesting a Trump retweet for their ballot counting livestream would violate international law.
