PERRY COUNTY, TN—In a bold move to protect the public from the ever-looming threat of internet humor, Perry County Sheriff Buck “Meme-Hammer” Jenkins placed local resident Larry Bushart, 61, under arrest for the high crime of Facebook meme posting after Bushart commented on a vigil post for slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Bushart’s comment, which included a poorly-cropped image of Kirk overlaid with the text “Live Laugh Libertarian,” reportedly sent at least three Facebook users into fits of mild annoyance.
According to the 30-page lawsuit now filed against the county, Bushart was jailed for 37 days in what Jenkins labeled a “preventive strike against digital insensitivity.” Sheriff Jenkins defended the decision, stating, “In this county, we take the First Amendment very seriously—except when it gets too spicy. We can’t have rogue grandpas running wild with JPEGs.”
Local prosecutor Diane ‘The Banhammer’ McCloskey insisted the arrest was justified. “We have a zero-tolerance policy for meme-based sedition,” she explained. “Next thing you know, people will be posting Minion memes and questioning the government. That’s how anarchy starts.”
Meanwhile, Perry County resident Midge Toller, 74, applauded the authorities’ vigilance. “I support our sheriff 100%. I thought ‘LOL’ stood for ‘Liberal Overthrow League’ until today. You can’t be too careful.”
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg commented, “We encourage free expression, except in jurisdictions where memes are considered a Schedule I controlled substance. Our hearts go out to anyone whose meme gets confiscated in a dawn raid.”
Bushart, free at last, has vowed to fight for justice—and possibly move to MySpace.
