Dollar General Agrees to $15M Settlement, Will Now Only Overcharge Shoppers Emotionally

In a landmark settlement reached Thursday, Dollar General announced it will pay $15 million to customers who, for years, bravely paid $2.19 for items boldly labeled “$1” on the shelf. The company, which operates over 20,000 stores nationwide and at least 30 different registers that actually work, admitted no wrongdoing while agreeing to scale back future price-gouging to “psychological discomfort only.”

“We realize that expecting customers to memorize what price we meant, versus what the shelf says, was perhaps a bridge too far,” said Dollar General spokesperson Nancy Cartwright, who confirmed all future price discrepancies would now be delivered as a gentle riddle at checkout. “For example, you’ll sense the toothpaste might cost more, but we won’t say outright. It’s all about the thrill of discovery.”

According to the settlement, all 330 million Americans are eligible for compensation, provided they still have receipts from their 2017 Arizona road trip. “If you can prove you ever shopped at a location within three miles of a Dollar General, you might be able to claim up to 78 cents,” said class-action attorney Rickey P. Tindleman, before clarifying that the payout would be received in store credit for an off-brand snack.

Shoppers across the nation applauded the news. “It feels good to be seen,” said Amanda Hill, 54, of Paducah, KY. “I always thought the $1 sticker was aspirational, like a vision board for grocery prices.”

Dollar General remains committed to its mission of affordable inconvenience and looks forward to continuing its tradition of surprising customers at checkout, but now in new and exciting ways.
