Lucasfilm Announces ‘Rogue One’ Script Finally Locked, Eight Years After Film’s Release

BURBANK, CA—After a harrowing eight-year journey through the galaxy of Google Docs and coffee-stained notepads, Lucasfilm announced Thursday that the script for 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” has finally reached a completed draft. The news comes after Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen revealed the cast improvised most of their lines while undergoing hypothermia on set.

“We are thrilled to put the finishing touches on the screenplay, just in time for the streaming release of the film’s 12th anniversary edition,” said Lucasfilm script coordinator Colby Fenwick, who described the writing process as “a heroic saga worthy of its own spinoff.”

Lead screenwriter Gary Whitta admitted to Variety that much of the movie was crafted in real-time. “Every morning, someone would hand me a napkin that just said ‘Rebellion? Question mark.’ We decided to just roll with it,” Whitta said. “Honestly, I wasn’t even sure of the plot until the premiere.”

On set, basic story elements such as character names and the existence of Death Stars reportedly changed hourly. “I distinctly remember playing a droid princess for two days,” Mikkelsen recalled. “Then suddenly I was Jyn Erso’s dad, and then briefly, a Sith Labrador.”

Despite the chaos, Disney executives praised the unconventional process. “Star Wars has always been about hope and last-minute panic,” claimed producer Tina Valerian. “We feel this script truly captures the spirit of both.”

Lucasfilm is now planning to auction the final, locked script, complete with ketchup stains and cryptic footnotes reading “Insert plot here.”
