KATHMANDU—In a bold move reminiscent of a college group project gone rogue, Nepal has announced that its national government will now be run by a daytime television host and a former freestyle rapper, signaling the official transformation of the Himalayan nation into a giant international youth hostel.
Rabi Lamichhane, famed for exposing minor corruption scandals in between commercial breaks, and Balendra ‘Balen’ Shah, Kathmandu’s mayor and Nepal’s only politician with a SoundCloud account, have joined forces following a wave of deadly youth protests. Their new campaign platform, tentatively titled ‘Democracy: But Make It Vibe’, pledges to abolish homework, legalize long hair, and solve corruption primarily through viral TikTok challenges.
‘Finally, someone who understands my struggle: the lack of dedicated Wi-Fi in the parliament,’ said activist and TikTok influencer Sushil Karki, who is rumored to have attended the protests mainly for content. ‘I trust Balen to drop fire policies and even hotter mixtapes.’
Experts warn of uncharted territory. ‘Nepal’s next constitution may be written entirely in emojis,’ noted veteran journalist Kumari Singh. ‘But at least we’ll have better lighting at government press conferences.’
Former Prime Minister Gyanendra Thapa expressed concern: ‘I’m not sure if governing is compatible with autotune.’
Lamichhane and Shah have promised inclusivity, with plans to hold cabinet meetings on Instagram Live, feature a government playlist on Spotify, and allow citizens to vote on policy via weekly elimination rounds.
