SOUTH BEND, IN — In a stunning postgame spectacle Wednesday night, Notre Dame head basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry reportedly attempted to place referee Melvin Trask under citizen’s arrest for “basketball crimes against humanity” following a controversial call that sealed a Fighting Irish loss.
Eyewitnesses claim Shrewsberry, flanked by player Cole Certa carrying duct tape and a copy of the NCAA rulebook, pursued Trask from center court to the parking lot, loudly reciting Miranda rights and demanding the ref “get in the van for questioning.”
“I just want answers,” Shrewsberry bellowed at a hastily gathered press scrum. “We’ve called in the FBI, the Vatican, and Judge Judy. We’ll take this all the way to the Supreme Court if we have to. Justice will be served—preferably before Selection Sunday.”
Trask, who was last seen hiding behind a vending machine in the arena hallway, told reporters via text: “I would appreciate a police escort and possibly the witness protection program. Also, is basketball even worth it?”
Notre Dame athletic director Chad Boggins supported his coach’s bold legal maneuver, stating, “As a university committed to truth, faith, and occasionally storming after officials, it’s our duty to hold referees accountable for all close calls—especially ones involving our school.”
Meanwhile, Notre Dame students have erected a mock courtroom in the quad, complete with robed mannequins and a gavel fashioned out of concession stand pretzels. “Let the trial begin!” declared student body president Marissa Fleck. “If the whistle fits, you must acquit.”
