Ofcom Announces New Policy: ‘If It’s on GB News, It’s Probably a Prank Show, So Why Bother?’

LONDON—Under increasing scrutiny from media watchdogs and citizens with access to television, the UK’s broadcast regulator Ofcom announced Tuesday that it would not investigate complaints over a GB News interview in which Donald Trump claimed both that climate change is a “hoax invented by wind turbines” and that “London’s mayor has been replaced by a council of imams who only communicate via WhatsApp.”

Ofcom chief Sir Reginald Pompington defended the decision, saying, “We have neither the time nor the personnel to fact-check every whimsical statement made on GB News. Frankly, if viewers can’t tell when someone is riffing, they have bigger problems than us.”

GB News anchor Nigel Monckton, who hosted the interview, applauded Ofcom’s response. “If we got pulled up every time a guest cited a unicorn sighting in Hackney or said the Thames runs backwards, we’d have to shut down by Monday.”

However, critics were unconvinced. Amanda Frizzle, head of the Campaign for Sensible Watching, declared, “This is a worrying precedent. If next week GB News says the Queen is opening a Nando’s in Birmingham to fight sharia law, will Ofcom just shrug and call it improv comedy?”

When reached for comment, Ofcom’s official spokesperson shrugged audibly over the phone and said, “We just assume GB News viewers know not to operate heavy machinery during or after broadcasts.”
