LOS ANGELES — Taking a bold step in video game adaptation, Amazon Prime Video announced Thursday it has cast Tom Cullen, Leisha Hailey, Raúl Castillo, and Owen Teague to star in the upcoming ‘Life Is Strange’ TV series, with all four actors reportedly watching YouTube playthroughs for at least 13 minutes to prepare for their roles.
Series producer Karen Blint claimed in a press release that, “We carefully selected actors who vaguely remember what a PlayStation is. Tom Cullen once bought an Xbox for his nephew and Leisha Hailey said she has seen a controller at a friend’s house, so we feel great about authenticity.”
Industry insiders say the cast will undergo intensive training in advanced dialogue-tree selection, staring pensively out windows, and time-reversal hand gestures. “We want to honor the spirit of the game by having our actors question every mundane choice, like how many times to microwave a burrito,” said script consultant Devin Marnoff, who has reportedly memorized all 78 endings of the original game.
Die-hard fans, meanwhile, are cautiously optimistic. “I’m excited to see how Amazon will translate Life Is Strange’s subtle, heartbreaking emotional choices into 54 minutes of characters sighing and looking at indie band posters,” said Tumblr user @ChloeForever1995. “Hopefully Tom Cullen can nail that dead-eyed stare when he opens his locker.”
As of press time, Amazon had confirmed that the show’s soundtrack will feature only bands with less than 400 Spotify listeners, to maintain the game’s commitment to incomprehensible obscurity.
