SEATTLE—Executives at Amazon Studios were quick to hail the company’s new Melania Trump documentary as a “resounding success” this week, after the film pulled in a record-breaking $7 million at the box office—leaving it just $68 million short of profitability.
The $75 million project, christened “Be Best: The Mystery of Melania,” received the largest promotional push in Amazon’s history, including a Times Square hologram of the former First Lady frowning silently for 48 hours, and free Premium shipping on all movie tickets.
“This is the kind of historic failure we can get behind,” said Amazon spokesperson Kaitlin Drexel. “We really feel like we’re closing the gap between Amazon Prime and Amazon Prime Meltdown.”
Detractors, however, have pointed out that the costly investment coincided with Amazon laying off 16,000 employees. “I know the film was expensive, but it has Melania standing very still for six minutes—that’s not easy to finance,” noted senior producer Todd Klember, nervously arranging a pile of pink slips.
Industry insiders speculated that the documentary may have been an attempt to curry favor with Donald Trump ahead of the presidential election. However, the former president remained coy. “I haven’t seen the movie, but I’m told she looks tremendous—maybe the most beautiful documentary wife ever filmed,” Trump reportedly posted on Truth Social.
Despite the financial setback, Amazon announced plans to recoup costs with a spin-off docuseries, tentatively titled “Barron: The Quietest Boy.”
