SEATTLE — Boldly pushing the boundaries of both comedy and capitalism, Amazon Prime Video has announced its upcoming animated series “Odd Jobs,” ingeniously set in the year 2127, a time when Earth is, as the show’s logline puts it, an “extreme late-stage capitalist hellscape.” Sources inside Amazon confirmed Thursday that the show will center on a ragtag band of gig-workers who travel around a scorched planet, hoping to earn enough BezosBucks to pay for oxygen refills and daily motivational holograms.
“We really wanted to imagine a future where the gig economy still exists—because, honestly, what else could possibly outlast climate collapse, democracy, or the heat death of the universe?” said Raylene Phelps, Amazon’s VP of Dystopian Content, lighting a cigar with a Prime membership card. “It’s the feel-good apocalypse comedy of the century.”
Co-creator Mike McMahan emphasized the show’s relatability: “We wanted to visualize a world where humanity’s best hope is a 3.5-star-rated handyman who’s also a part-time asteroid ride-share driver and full-time NFT life coach.”
Early scripts reportedly include side-splitting adventures such as waiting three weeks for a gig notification, and escaping a mutant landlord while delivering drone food to the only surviving influencer on Earth. “You laugh, you cry, you update your résumé for the millionth time,” noted Dominic Dierkes, fellow co-creator, “It’s basically an Amazon onboarding video set to animation.”
Amazon has already begun marketing “Odd Jobs” with immersive in-home experiences, including Alexa devices sending users random job reminders at 3 a.m. “It’s never too early to practice for 2127,” said Phelps.
