NEWARK, NJ — Social media firebrand and self-declared immigration expert Júnior Pena was detained by ICE agents Tuesday after authorities discovered his status as an undocumented influencer could not, contrary to popular belief, be resolved with a viral hashtag.
Pena, known for both his bedazzled MAGA hat and breathtaking misunderstanding of American law, was apprehended while livestreaming about the importance of deporting ‘illegals who are totally not like me.’ The influencer, who had previously reassured his 600,000 followers that “only crooks get deported,” appeared momentarily confused when agents showed him a mirror.
Sources within ICE describe the takedown as ‘satisfyingly ironic.’ Agent Lisa Hammonds told reporters, “We were planning a raid on an actual criminal ring, but then Júnior kept tagging our office in his Instagram Stories with #DeportTheCrooks, and, well, we figured why not?”
Upon learning his blue check mark would not grant him diplomatic immunity, Pena reportedly asked if at least he could keep his ring light for one last TikTok. “He claimed his arrest would be huge content,” said ICE spokesperson Greg Gutierrez, “but unfortunately, our cell blocks have a strict no-selfie policy.”
Fellow Brazilian expat and part-time samba instructor Rodrigo Cabral, who attended Pena’s failed seminar, expressed mild shock: “I thought if you shout ‘Build The Wall!’ loud enough, the border patrol just hands you a green card. Turns out, it’s more complicated than that.”
Pena is expected to continue his activism from detention, where sources say he has already launched “Prisoners for Trump 2024.”
