In a shocking revelation from his new Netflix documentary, Eddie Murphy: Laughs, Lies & Laserdiscs, comedy legend Eddie Murphy recounted the night the King of Siam, a Studio 54 turntablist, and an intoxicated foam puppet all propositioned him within a span of twenty minutes at his 21st birthday party.
Murphy described the evening at the notorious disco as a “dizzying carousel of offers, some more contractual than romantic.” Among those allegedly vying for his attention was Yul Brynner, who reportedly approached the young comic with the line, “Would you like to see my royal scepter backstage?” according to Murphy’s recollection. The actor claims he declined, citing a sudden need to “replenish my Soul Glo.”
Also entering the fray was resident Studio 54 DJ Gino “Lights Out” Falcone, who, Murphy says, offered to “spin more than just vinyl” if Murphy was interested. “Young celebrities were always getting indecent proposals, but Eddie was special,” Falcone later told reporters. “He had the moves, the smile, and one of those little beepers everyone wanted.”
Perhaps most troubling, Murphy noted, was an amorous approach from a wandering Muppet later identified as “Telly Monster,” who, after consuming three gin and Tang cocktails, reportedly told Murphy, “I love you more than the letter S!”
A Studio 54 historian, Dr. Candace Glitterbaum, noted, “If you made it to midnight at Studio 54 without being propositioned by an Oscar winner or someone from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, you were doing it wrong.”
When reached for comment, Murphy simply said, “That’s Studio 54 for you. One minute, you’re blowing out candles, the next, you’re warding off royalty, beats, and puppets. That’s why I dance—I gotta stay moving.”
