Judd Apatow Pays Tribute to Rob Reiner, Who Is Very Much Alive, At Mel Brooks Premiere: ‘His Absence From This Room is a Tragedy’

LOS ANGELES — Hearts were heavy and confusion ran rampant at the red carpet premiere of HBO’s “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man” Monday night as Judd Apatow delivered an impassioned eulogy for Rob Reiner, noted director, actor, and—according to several reputable attendees—still among the living.

“Rob’s absence leaves an unfillable hole,” Apatow proclaimed, taking a solemn moment next to a giant ice sculpture of Mel Brooks’ face. “It’s just a tragedy he couldn’t join us tonight, probably due to being late or double-booked.”

Reiner, reportedly alive and active on Twitter as recently as 30 minutes prior, was at home watching “Jeopardy!” and eating microwave popcorn. “I appreciate the kind words, but I have a doctor’s appointment at 8 a.m. and couldn’t make the premiere,” Reiner stated via FaceTime, reassuring guests he had not ‘crossed over into the great beyond, or even Burbank.’

“I was sobbing for a full twenty minutes before anyone told me Rob was just stuck in traffic,” said co-director Leo Mechanic. “Judd’s speech was so moving, I briefly considered writing my will.”

Brooks, 99, added, “I’ve survived everyone! I’m not even tired. Also, Rob owes me $12.”

Sources confirm Apatow has pledged to continue honoring Reiner’s legacy well into dinner, unless Reiner swings by for a slice of cake.
