Across the United States, Latino small business owners are reportedly expressing nostalgia for the economic boom of 2016, but with an important caveat: they would appreciate it significantly more if former President Donald Trump could supply his trademark prosperity without personally being involved in any way.
“I loved my taco truck business in 2017, but I didn’t love having to explain to customers that I wasn’t here to steal jobs,” said Miami entrepreneur Eliana Torres, who now dreams of a future Mexit—leaving the state of Florida entirely. “If Trump can just email the economy to us, that would be perfect. I don’t need the tweets.”
A study by the Pew Centro de Biznesses* found that 67% of Latino business owners “fondly recall the days when everyone was too busy fighting on Facebook to notice the economy,” but 72% also now believe the only thing trickling down is the anxiety.
Republican strategist Brad Mays insisted, “President Trump has always supported Latino businesses—as long as they’re not in direct competition with his hotels or golf courses. Besides, he practically invented Taco Tuesday.”
Meanwhile, Texas auto body shop owner Jorge Mendoza reported mixed feelings. “I used to like Trump’s economy, but now my customers are paying with leftover MAGA hats,” he sighed. “I can’t turn those into rent. Believe me, I’ve tried.”
Analysts say Republicans are concerned about losing crucial votes unless they can develop a new economic message that delivers prosperity, security, and a 100% money-back guarantee on all campaign promises.
