MONACO—Manchester United co-owner and part-time geopolitical commentator Sir Jim Ratcliffe issued a clarification Monday after a wave of outrage over his weekend assertion that the UK is being “colonised by immigrants,” explaining that, in fact, he meant to say “colonised by Liverpool fans in Manchester city centre pubs.”
“I deeply regret my choice of phrase and apologize to anyone who thought I was talking about actual immigrants—my only true concern is footballing allegiances,” said Ratcliffe in a hastily arranged press conference held from his Monaco wine cellar. “If anything, I want the UK to welcome more investment—as long as those investors don’t wear red scarves or chant ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ near Old Trafford.”
Public relations consultant Abigail Flangbury described the apology as “the gold standard for billionaire backpedaling,” adding, “It’s rare to see such swift pivoting outside of a malfunctioning VAR replay.” Meanwhile, United season ticket holder Terence Puddle called on Ratcliffe to be “more specific in future outbursts,” suggesting, “Next time, please clarify if you’re ranting about immigration or about our midfield being infiltrated by Arsenal rejects.”
The Football Association has launched a full inquiry into fan colonization, issuing a statement that “all table reservations at Manchester pubs will be restricted to locals who can name at least three classic United left-backs.” Ratcliffe, for his part, is reportedly now seeking counsel on how to avoid offending any more groups, with the possible exception of City supporters, who, sources confirm, “don’t count.”
