WASHINGTON—In what aides are calling a ‘tragic misunderstanding of both taste and technology,’ former President Donald Trump posted a video depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes, reportedly while attempting to tweet a gif of a dog wearing sunglasses.
Leading Democrats and the nation’s only Black Republican senator, Tim Scott, condemned the video, while Trump maintained it was ‘just a slip of the finger.’ ‘Frankly, I was just trying to post my favorite Garfield meme,’ Trump told reporters, ‘but the internet is very confusing. There are too many buttons. Who are these Obamas anyway?’
Top Democratic leaders were quick to respond. ‘This is another example of the former president’s unhinged commitment to both racism and questionable internet comedy,’ said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who revealed his favorite meme is ‘that one with Kermit and the tea.’ Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer issued a joint statement with his pet corgi, Reginald, denouncing Trump as a ‘malignant meme lord.’
White House IT specialist Barry Rundle offered context for the mishap. ‘We found fifteen open tabs for ‘funny animal pics’ and twelve for ‘how to delete a tweet.’ At one point, Mr. Trump tried to DM Abraham Lincoln. It’s chaos back there.’
Meanwhile, Tim Scott encouraged the former president to ‘try logging off and reading a book, perhaps one without pictures.’
