In a dramatic turn at the International Hall of Pouting Athletes, the US men’s hockey team was awarded a hard-fought bronze medal in Competitive Snickering after openly laughing at a Donald Trump dig targeting the US women’s soccer team. The team’s giggle-fest, which reportedly began in the locker room and climaxed on the podium, was so intense that several players sustained minor abdominal injuries.
The controversy erupted after the men’s team, fresh off their own gold medal win, was caught on camera cackling at the former president’s characterization of Megan Rapinoe and company as “trash.” Rapinoe, a four-time World Cup smirker herself, fired back immediately, calling the team “a bunch of adolescent jesters who couldn’t even out-skate a Twitter troll.”
“We’re just proud to have been recognized for our elite-level pettiness,” said team captain Chad ‘Chuckles’ Dunham, accepting the bronze medal for Snickering. “We train year-round in sarcasm drills and meme reposting. Frankly, we’re disappointed it wasn’t gold.”
Hockey analyst Pat Blarney noted, “This is the first time in Olympic history a team has ruined both its own victory and someone else’s in under 30 seconds. It’s a real record-setter.”
Meanwhile, International Sportsmanship Commission chair Linda Cronkite announced, “We will now require all medalists to take a remedial Respect seminar with Mr. Rogers’ hologram.”
The US men’s team offered an official response, stating, “If making fun of greatness is wrong, we don’t want to be right.”
