PANAMA CITY—In a move that has sent shockwaves through the international football community, Panama’s national team unveiled its audacious new philosophy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: touching the ball.
“We have big dreams this year,” proclaimed head coach Aurelio Tapia at a jubilant press conference Tuesday. “This time, our strategy is simple: Make contact with the ball during active play. Ideally, more than once.”
The tactical overhaul comes after Panama’s historic 2018 campaign, when they famously invented the sport of ‘Defensive Huddling’ and were commended by FIFA for their “enthusiastic presence.” Now, with a second qualification in eight years, excitement is surging that Panama might explore previously uncharted territories on the pitch, including ‘passing’ and, in extreme situations, ‘shooting.’
Team captain Jorge Palacios elaborated, “We’ve been watching a lot of YouTube tutorials. There’s a thing called ‘midfield control’ apparently. We’re excited to give it a try—if we can find it.”
Panama’s Football Federation is leaving no stone unturned, hiring a Canadian motivational speaker, Todd McKellan, who assured fans, “Panama’s goal is no longer just to participate, but to exist in proximity to the ball for a sustained period—possibly even an entire half.”
Meanwhile, fans across the country are preparing with unfamiliar optimism. “This could be the year we retain possession for a full three seconds,” said lifelong supporter Marta Espinoza. “We’re telling the kids to dream big.”
FIFA has yet to comment, but sources say the group stage schedule has been adjusted to allow Panama adequate time to acclimate to the concept of ball possession.
