FBI Seizes 600 Drones Over World Cup, Declares Victory in War on Unlicensed Aerial Soccer Fans

In a stunning blow to the nation’s growing underground drone soccer fandom, the FBI triumphantly announced Saturday the capture of more than 600 rogue drones that dared to fly over World Cup matches in restricted U.S. airspace. The seizures, which spanned all 11 host cities, signaled a decisive victory in what officials are calling “Operation Sky Goalkeeper.”

“We simply can’t allow unsanctioned drones to hover over stadiums, rain down confetti, or livestream blurry snippets of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s latest heartbreak,” said Special Agent Linda Rubble, leader of the Joint Aerial Threats Task Force. “That’s what the official broadcast rights are for.”

Miami topped the leaderboard with 99 confiscated drones, many of which were described as “unlicensed, over-enthusiastic, and suspiciously equipped with tiny vuvuzelas.” Atlanta and Kansas City followed, with 77 and 32 airborne troublemakers respectively. Agents reported several close encounters with the so-called “Soccer Mom 4000” quadcopters, programmed to air-drop orange slices mid-match.

Charles D. Glidden, president of the National Drone Pilots Association, decried the crackdown. “We just want to get closer to the action,” Glidden insisted while soldering a GoPro to a weather balloon. “And maybe do some basic reconnaissance for our fantasy leagues. Is that a crime?”

Fans, however, were divided. “Honestly, I was just trying to deliver my World Cup-themed marriage proposal banner. Now my drone’s in Guantanamo,” said disappointed Dallas resident Paige Linhart. Law enforcement officials say all seized drones are being detained in undisclosed hangars, where they face months of rehabilitation and forced replay analysis.
